2000 World Figure Skating Championships, Nice.
Ladies Qualifying, Wednesday 29th March.

Group A (skated second).

Warm-up Group 1.

Shirene Human skated before Eurosport broadcast began, didn't see her at all.

Maria Butyrskaya (RUS) - 3lutz; 3flip; lovely flying camel, nice height; 3toe half loop 2salchow, but she definitely fell out of the toe, she was lucky to make the other jumps; 3loop; layback; spiral sequence; 3salchow; spin combo; 2axel hand down; 3toe; spin combo. Despite the jump problems, she was really looking good, nice knee bend and flow from the jumps. 5.4 to 5.7, 5.6 to 5.8.

Lucia Starovicova (SVK) - 3toe2toe, triple was huge; 2axel; 3salchow, 2footed ; 3loop, underrotated, two footed; flying camel; spin combo; serpentine spirals; 2axel fall; 3toe two footed; spin combo; 1flip; steps into 2lutz; circular steps; layback, sideways leaning. 3.4 to 4.1, 3.5 to 4.1.

Diana Poth (HUN) - 3toe2toe; 3lutz, fall (two-footed); circular step; flying camel to sit; 1loop; 2flip; layback; serpentine spirals; 1flip; straight steps; 2salchow; 2axel; spin combo; scratch spin. 4.1 to 4.6, 4.1 to 4.9. She was crying in the K&C and didn't look up at her marks at all.

Elena Liashenko (UKR) - 3lutz2toe, huge lutz; 3flip step out; 2toe; 3loop two-footed; flying camel; 3salchow landed forward; layback, fast; 3toe2toe; straight steps; 2axel; spin combo. 4.7 to 5.2, 4.9 to 5.3.

Group 2.

Mikkeline Kierkgaard (DEN) - layback; 3loop; 3toe; 2flip, stumble out; flying camel; 2axel2toe; 3salchow; spin combo; serpentine spirals; 3toe2toe; circular steps; 3salchow2toe; changefoot sit; 2axel. I think she skated about as well as she can. One thing I like about her is she looks 15, not going for the "little girl" look like Lipinski at 15, nor caked in makeup and trying to look older like Kwan at 15. 4.8 to 5.3, 5.1 to 5.5, second!.

Tatiana Malinina (UZB) - 3lutz, two-footed; 3flip, deep knee bend, barely held; 3toe, fall; 2loop; 3salchow fall, leaning in air; spin combo, beautiful, fast; serpentine spirals; 3toe turn 2toe, triple may have been two-footed; layback; straight steps; 2axel; flying camel; scratch spin, blurred! I love this programme. 4.6 to 5.2, 4.9 to 5.4.

Liza Menagia (GRE) - 3salchow two-footed turn 2toe; 2lutz fall; 2axel; flying camel; circular steps; serpentine spirals; 3toe? confusing entry, two footed; spin combo; 2loop; 2flip two footed stumble out; layback; changefoot sit. 3.1 to 3.8, 3.1 to 4.0. Her coach looks just like Martin Clunes! Greek men's singles bloke was in K&C with her.

Zoya Douchine (GER) - 3toe2toe, huge triple; 1flutz step out; 3flip2toe, flip two-footed; flying camel; 3salchow; layback; serpentine spirals; 3loop, long entry; Biellmann, ugly position with free leg very bent, knee sticking out; 3toe; 2axel; spin combo. 4.7 to 5.2, 4.8 to 5.2. Funny noises from the crowd, neither booing nor whistling, but I don't think they liked the marks.

Alisa Drei (FIN) - 3toe fall; 3lutz barely held; 3flip fall; layback; 3loop; 3flip turn 2toe; spin; serpentine spirals; 3salchow just held; flying camel; 2axel; spin combo with Biellmann, her position is very good. 4.6 to 5.2, 4.6 to 5.0. Lots of talking in K&C, she said her skates were shaking, Chris speculates it's because she was putting so much pressure on them, trying too hard. Couldn't hear much because commentators were talking over it, grrr.

Group 3.

Valeria Trifancova (LAT) - 2axel2toe; 3salchow, had to bend knee really low and eventually spun out; 1loop; spiral round in a circle; layback; 3toe fall two-footed; flying camel; charlotte; 2axel fall; steps into 2flip; steps into 2lutz; 2loop half-loop 2salchow; spin combo. Simon said that at the end, she was doubling jumps she should be tripling, but they were clearly meant as doubles or they wouldn't have been so late in the programme. 3.7 to 4.8, 3.6 to 4.8. Whistles.

Galina Maniachenko (UKR) - 3lutz; 3loop spin out; flying camel interesting arm position; 3flip fall; 2flip, leaning in air; 1axel; 1salchow, seemed to be a problem on takeoff, no height and leaning; layback, very fast but some travel; 3toe; steps, serpentine? didn't notice; 1axel; spin combo; backspin. Nasty dress, I really like the skirt, but the top half is covered in fake flesh and plastic gold and jewels. 4.0 to 4.9, 4.1 to 5.0.

Julia Sebestyen (HUN) - massive 3lutz; 2flip, very high; 3toe; 2axel; 3loop; spin combo, gorgeous speed, positions, centring; steps into 2lutz; 3toe fall; layback; 3salchow turn 2toe; flying camel; circular steps; deathdrop. She's one of my favourites, she reminds me a lot of Irina Slutskaya. I hope the 2axel's in there in the right place, I missed it at the time but heard applause and saw it in the replays, so I think that's where it was. 4.7 to 5.3, 5.0 to 5.4. Third. Big smile!

Anna Rechnio (POL) - 3lutz fall; 3flip two footed, fall out 2toe; flying camel; 3toe fall; 3loop fall; layback; serpentine spirals; 2salchow; 3toe two-footed; straight steps; flying sit; 2axel two-footed; spin combo. So sad to see. 4.0 to 4.7, 4.5 to 5.0. Very high marks considering she didn't land any triples at all.

Diane Chen (TPE) - 2axel2toe, fall on very tiny 2toe; some kind of jump; 3toe landed forward hop out 2toe; 3salchow underrotated; flying camel; 2lutz, small; 2flip; straight steps; 2axel; layback; flying sit. Very cool music, slow part of B&Ks 96 FD followed by Sing, Sing, Sing, and back to the first part again. Apparently she's from Virginia, really. 3.2 to 3.7, 3.3 to 3.8. She's not last! One below her. Probably only because she skated later.

Ellen Mareels (BEL) - 3toe, but underrotated I think; 2axel spin out foot down; 3loop underrotated fell out; flying camel; 2flip; circular steps; 2axel fall 2toe; flying sit; serpentine spirals; 3salchow fall out; 3toe2toe fall on 2toe; layback, lovely; spin combo not bad. Strange ending to the music. Dress is very nice apart from all the orange flesh fabric. 3.5 to 4.1, missed the second set of marks as I was finding out her name, I missed it at the start.

Group 4.

Yulia Vorobieva (AZE) - 1lutz, no height; 1flip; 3loop landed forward; flying camel; 2axel; serpentine spirals; 1flip feet everywhere don't know what happened; 2toe; 2toe; layback, sideways leaning; 2toe; flying sit; circular steps; 2salchow; fast spin combo ending with scratch, but some travel. What was she wearing?! skirt was just flaps of material, shiny white elbow-length gloves...urgh. 3.5 to 4.4, 4.0 to 4.5. 14th.

Kaja Hanevold (NOR) - 1lutz; 3toe1toe; 3salchow fall; spin combo, travel; 2axel; 2flip, I think; layback; 2axel; 2salchow; flying camel; 1toe; circular steps; backspin. Lovely dress. 3.4 to 4.0, 3.4 to 4.6.

Roxana Luca (ROM) - 3loop underrotated two-footed; 3salchow spin out; 1axel step out; flying camel; 3toe; 2axel; layback, ugly position; 3toe turn, foot down 2toe; 3salchow; spin combo; circular steps; 2lutz; 2flip; changefoot camel to scratch, not terribly fast. she has gold hearts on the heels of her boots. 4.1 to 4.7, 4.0 to 4.7. She was chewing her fingers after the first set of marks, and shouted and jumped in the air when she got the second set and found out she'd qualified in 11th!

Rocio Salas Visuet (MEX) - fast flying camel went on for ever; 2axel fall; 3salchow fall; 2loop; layback, nice; spirals, with outside to inside spreadeagle; 2flutz; spin combo; straight steps; 1flip; 2toe; changefoot camel. Nice skater, and her first two spins were very good. The other two spins were not all that good, so I don't know quite what to make of her. 3.0 to 3.7, 3.1 to 3.7. Last place.

Sarah -Yvonne Prytula (AUS) - 1loop, no height; 2axel; 3toe underrotated and two-footed; spin combo, pretty good, ugly Biellmann with the foot behing the head rather than over it, I hate it when they do that, it does not look good; 1axel fall right in front of the judges; 1loop same problem as first time; serpentine spirals, pretty good position in last one, though needs more stretch; layback; 2flutz2toe; flying sit; 1flip; very slow flying camel into reasonable scratch. 3.2 to 3.7, 3.3 to 3.8. Lots of whistles, not sure why. Probably bored!

Anna Lundstrom (SWE) - 3loop; 3lutz fall two footed; 2axel; 3toe; 3toe stumble out; spin that I missed, layback?; serpentine spirals; 3flip fall, nearly got it; 3loop fall, two footed; deathdrop; straight steps; 3salchow; flying sit; spin combo, trouble centring though it wasn't too bad in the end. 4.3 to 4.9, to 5.0. Eighth.

Group B.

Irina Slutskaya (RUS) 3lutz2toe; 3salchow2loop; flying camel; 3lutz; flying sit; 3loop; straight steps; 3flip; spin combo; serpentine spirals; 2axel; 3toe; layback.

Chris and Simon were ranting about the qualifying groups, apparently Tammy Sear did two 3toes and would've qualified if she had been in the other group, while skaters who qualified from group A would've been nowhere near qualifying in group B. Apparently there'll be a press conference with Ottavio Cinquanta tomorrow morning, and they said he'd have to answer some questions. "Sometimes the ISU are good at listening, sometimes not" says Simon. Chris thinks there should be seeding based on GPF, other internationals and Europeans/Four Continents this year, he says it shouldn't be difficult. Their favourite Diana Poth qualified in 11th, when she skated they thought she wouldn't qualify at all. It is just so completely unfair, worse than anyone expected.
