2000 World Figure Skating Championships, Nice.
Ladies Free Programme, Saturday 1st April

Warm-up Group 1.

Zoya Douchine (GER) - 3toe2toe; 3flutz two-footed; 3flip foot just kept off, thought it was two-footed at first; flying camel; 3sal; straight steps; layback; spirals; 3loop; that nasty Biellmann again, "a very nice Biellmann to follow" says Simon, was he watching it?; 3toe; spin combo. 4.4s except one 4.5 and one 4.6, 4.3 to 4.5.

Ivana Jakupcevic (CRO) - 3toe turn 2toe; 3sal two-footed step out; camel, probably flying but she was already spinning when I looked up; flying sit; 2axel; 3loop two-footed; circular steps; layback; spiral; 2lutz; jump I missed, must've been a double because Simon says she has landed only one triple, probably a double flip I suppose; 3toe; 2axel step out; spin combo. 3.7 to 4.2, 3.8 to 4.0. CW.

Shirene Human (RSA) - 3toe, iffy landing; ina bauer; 2sal; changefoot camel must've been short on revolutions though I didn't count; 2axel2toe; 3toe fall; straight steps; 2flip2toe; spin combo; layback, nice position, good speed and centring; spirals; 2axel from the spirals; 2flutz; 2loop; flying camel didn't really fly. 3.6 to 4.0, 3.6 to 4.3.

Siyin Sun (CHN) - 2axel from nowhere; 3toe2toe, big triple; 3loop landed forwards two footed turn 2toe; layback right in front of the judges; 3sal again right in front of the judges; flying camel; spin combo with hop-over change of foot, a bit slow; 3toe very hard fall; circular spiral, stutter on the first one, seemed to go too far over the toe-pick; 2something; 3sal fall out turns 2toe; flying sit; scratch spin come travel. She's only 15 and quite tiny. Talented. 3.9 to 4.4, 3.8 to 4.4.

Anna Lundstrom (SWE) - 3loop underrotated and two-footed; 3lutz fall; 2axel; 3toe; 3toe, those two supposed to be combination but lots of turns in between; layback; spirals ending in the splits on the ice which got applause; 3flip fall, strange entry; flying camel didn't fly but it was more than just a step at least; straight steps; 2salchow; flying sit-upright, travelled; 3salchow; spin combo. 4.0 to 4.5, 4.2 to 4.7.

Silvia Fontana (ITA) - lots of cheers as she skates out which brings a beaming smile to her face! - 3lutz2toe; 2flip; catchfoot camel; 2loop; straight steps; 3salchow step out; 3toe; flying camel; "She's changing the programme halfway through" says Simon; layback; circular spirals; 2axel; 2toe; 2axel step out; spin combo. Doesn't look too disappointed. 4.2 to 4.5, 4.4 to 4.9. Three second places but the rest first, strange. Douchine still leads overall though.

Group 2.

Alisa Drei (FIN) - 3toe; 2lutz; layback; oh, I hate this bit, where she stands still in the middle of the ice, makes silly movements with her hand and watches it; 3loop; 2lutz; spirals; 3flip scratchy but just held; 3salchow hand down; flying camel; 2axel2toe; spin combo with Biellmann, lovely position. Didn't really see the scores, mostly mid to high 4s from the quick glance I got. A couple of second places and one third, but mostly firsts.

Galina Maniachenko (UKR) - 2lutz; 3loop hand down; flying camel; 3flip; 1lutz absolutely no height; 2axel; 2sal again no height; layback fast and centred; spirals; 3toe fall; straight steps; 1axel; another jump after it; spin combo; backspin. Tammy Sear commentating again, she says the ice is great! 4.0 to 4.5, 4.2 to 4.6. "If she hadn't spent so much time on her backside, the presentation would've been better as well" says Simon LOL!

Tatiana Malinina (UZB) - 3lutz fall; 3flip, it was two-footed says Tammy, I would imagine she's right though I didn't notice it; 3toe; 3loop fall, underrotated; 3sal2toe, sal two-footed; spin combo; 2lutz; layback; straight steps; 2axel fall; flying camel; scratch spin, very fast. 4.1 to 4.7, 4.3 to 5.0. A couple of first places, can't see where that came from. Doesn't look too disappointed, smiling in the K&C.

Diana Poth (HUN) - 3toe2toe; 3lutz; circular steps I think; flying camel-sit; 2loop; 1flip no height at all; layback; spirals; 3flip fall; straight steps; 3sal; 2axel; spin combo good; scratch spin. 4.6 to 5.0, 4.6 to 5.1. A couple of seconds and a third, the rest firsts.

Anna Rechnio (POL) - coach said something that made her laugh at the boards but no sign of a smile as she skates out, in fact I haven't seen a smile all week - 3flip fall; 3flutz hand down step out 2toe; flying camel; 3toe very light; 2loop; layback; spirals; someone yells out to her from the crowd; 3flip; 3loop; straight steps; flying sit; 2axel fall; spin combo. Hits herself on the head with the palm of her hand. Thank goodness she got rid of the outfit with the nasty green and gold giant sequin things dangling everywhere. Smiling in the K&C! 4.4 to 4.8, 4.6 to 5.2, firsts seconds and third. Not happy of course, but not upset and still a little smile.

Yoshie Onda (JPN) - 3flip; 3lutz hand down; spin combo; 3toe2toe; 3sal just held; 2axel; flying sit; layback fast and well centred but not great position; spirals; 3loop fall; 3sal2toe; flying camel; 3toe; circular steps; 2axel. Her jumps are just huge. 4.7 to 5.2, 4.5 to 5.0. Into first, very happy and waving to the crowd from the K&C!

Group 3.

Mikkeline Kierkgaard (DEN) - layback; 3loop; 3toe; 2flip; flying camel; 2lutz I think; 3salchow; spin combo; spirals; 3toe2toe; circular steps; 3sal2toe; spin combo; 2axel. 4.7 to 5.2, 5.0 to 5.6. Looked delighted with both her skate and her marks, and I love her coach, he always looks to be just bursting with pride when she skates!

Sabine Wojtala (POL) - 3lutz2toe; 2flip; flying sit; 3toe2toe; layback; spirals; 2axel; 1loop; ugly Biellmann; 1something; circular steps; 2sal; 3sal; spin combo. 4.5 to 5.1, 4.5 to 5.1, places from second to eighth, fifth on the free, third overall.

Viktoria Volchkova (RUS) - 3lutz2toe, lutz huge; 3flip; 1loop; flying camel; 3salchow; 3toe; layback; 1axel; 3lutz fall, underrotated; straight steps; spin combo;2loop; spin combo. 4.5 to 5.3, 4.7 to 5.5. Two seconds and one fourth, the rest firsts.

Angela Nikodinov (USA) - 3flutz; 3loop; layback, lovely of course; 2flip; changefoot camel, slow and although I didn't count, was short on revolutions; 3flutz; 2sal; flying camel; 2something; straight steps; 2axel; spin combo. One of the flutzes was two-footed, I don't remember which. 4.6 to 5.1, 4.9 to 5.4, first to seventh places, third on the free, second overall.

Jennifer Robinson (CAN) - 3salchow; 3lutz2toe; flying camel; 3flip; 3lutz may have been two-footed; spin combo; 3loop two-footed spin out; 3toe; 3salchow2toe; flying sit; 2axel; layback. Huge roar from the crowd, coaches jumping up and down , Robinson is in tears. 4.9 to 5.4, 5.3 to 5.7 and the coaches scream, clap and look happier than her, she shouts "I did it! I did it!" and cries again as she leaves the K&C.

D&V in the audience.

Elena Liashenko (UKR) - 3lutz; 3flip, thought she'd held it but falls; 3toe; 3loop landed forward; flying camel; 2sal; layback; 3sal2toe; straight steps; 2axel; spin combo. Boring. I don't really like her skating anyway, and without the jumps it's just bleah. Top group are coming out for the warm-up and there's a huge roar for Gusmeroli. Bigger cheers for Butyrskaya and Slutskaya than Kwan and Hughes! 4.8to 5.1, 5.1 to 5.6, second to sixth, fourth overall, not sure about the free on its own.

Group 4.

They're interviewing Stojko now, but I missed most of the interview. Said Robinson had a great skate, talked about his injury and coming back, blah blah.

Michelle Kwan (USA) - 3loop; 3flutz2toe; 3toe3toe; "she looks in one of those moods where she's not going to miss a thing" says Simon; 3salchow; layback; 3flip; flying camel-sit; 2axel; flying sit fast for her; spirals, love that new variation on the change-edge spiral; spin combo; 3flutz; steps into wonderful Charlotte. She looks so happy, really thrilled with her performance! It is a lovely programme, though I don't see that it's as difficult and complex as people say. The jumps had great flow, much better than I've seen before, but they did come very early in the programme for the most part. Also quite slow spins. Beautiful dress, too. 5.6 to 5.8, 5.8s and 5.9s.

Vanessa Gusmeroli (FRA) - absolutely massive roar for her. 3lutz2toe, lutz two-footed; 3flip; 3loop; people were apparently standing up by this point, a minute in; 3salchow; 3lutz; ina bauer; 3toe a little iffy but not really a problem; flying camel; 2axel, her axels are so scary she just throws herself into them; "Gusmeroli slide" (splits); spin combo; layback; camel-sit type position; reverse camel, only a couple of revolutions; camel spin. Strange expression on her face, kind of relieved and drained, the crowd are standing to her and she cries. A pity about the first lutz. She coped with the pressure wonderfully, but it wasn't as emotional as at Europeans, I think she had to concentrate too hard to really be able to put much expression in. 5.5s except one 5.6 and one 5.7, 5.6 to 5.7. The crowd don't like the marks at all.

Julia Sebestyen (HUN) - 3lutz very high but a hand down; 3flip fall, a groan from the crowd; ina bauer; lovely spiral; 3loop ; 2axel big but step out; gorgeous spin combo; steps into 3lutz2toe, fell out of toe; 3toe I think; layback; 3salchow fall; flying camel; circular steps; death drop. Looks disappointed but not devastated. This was her first time in the top group, and to follow Kwan's fine skate and Gusmeroli's good skate and amazing reception must have been awful. 4.9 to 5.3, 5.1 to 5.4, fourth to eighth and doesn't look upset, smiles and waves. There were scattered whistles for the first mark, crumbs, they'll whistle anything.

Maria Butyrskaya (RUS) - 3lutz; 3flip; flying camel; 3toe half-loop 3sal underrotated and stepped out; 3loop; layback; spirals in no particular pattern so far as I can tell; 2sal; spin combo; 2axel; 3toe; spiral; spin combo. Chris says she should've tried the salchow again at the end. 5.4 to 5.7, 5.7 to 5.9, second and third places, but second on a 5 to 4 split, first ahead of Kwan overall, Kwan needs another skater to come between them, the crowd boo, I don't think they understand, Cinquanta looks down, puts his hand to his head, I wonder what he's thinking, he's not happy!

Irina Slutskaya (RUS) - 3lutz2loop; 2salchow; 3sal2loop; flying camel; 3lutz very high; flying sit; 3loop from three turns; straight steps; 3flip, wonderful; fabulous spin combo with double Biellmann; spirals; 2axel; 3toe; lovely layback faster and better centred than in the short. It looks to be Kwan's title. She still looks happy with her performance, though. I think it's going to be really close, a split between the judges. 5.6 to 5.9, 5.6 to 5.9, two firsts, the rest second, some boos, then screams as the result comes up. Yet Kwan is lying on the floor backstage, I don't think she knows!

Sarah Hughes (USA) - 2axel; 3sal3loop step out; Yspin; 3toe3loop step out and hand down; 3flutz; layback-change-position between a catchfoot camel and a Biellmann; 3flip; spiral; 2axel; 3toe; flying illusion spin; spin combo. A great skate for her, and her coach goes crazy at the boards! 5.3 to 5.7 and the crowd don't like it, 5.4 to 5.6, and the crowd really don't like it, she looks a little disappointed but she shouldn't be. All fifths except one six.

It seems Kwan has only just found out that she's won! And she looked happier with her performance than the result, that's good. Chris says he thinks the draw worked in her favour. All grown ladies on the podium, that's good for the sport.

A long wait for the presentation, lots of interviews going on! Last lady to win the World title three times was Katarina Witt says Simon. Slutskaya looks happy and hugs Kwan. No applause for Cinquanta as he walks out to present the medals, ha!. Kwan cries as the anthem plays, not a smile as she tries not to let the tears fall. But a beaming smile when it finishes!
